Hey, You Should Play This #10: Rambo: Last Blood

Wow, I've done ten of these already? That's cool.  This game is a little different, a little surreal, and a lot fantastic and hilarious.  In John Rambo's (fictional) last outing, Last Blood, he is killed and must make peace with those he has killed-- by giving them massive Rambo hugs, of course-- in order to gain entrance into Valhalla, where there will be lobster and wives for all.  It was created by Peter Javidpour for MolyJam and will probably make your day.  Of course the link is after the jump and all that-- do I really have to keep reminding you at this point, 10 articles in?

The Top Five Worst Mario Games Not On Nintendo Systems

So today I was minding my own business reading This Week in Business on Kotaku when I saw a particular quote that really rustled my jimmies.
"Nintendo has to let Mario games on non-Nintendo devices."—Nanako Imazu, Tokyo stock analyst, talking about what Nintendo has to do to reverse its massive loss for last year.

Now anybody who's know anything about Nintendo's practices knows this guy is a total idiot.  Not only has Nintendo said that the day Nintendo games show up on other devices is the day Nintendo ceases to be Nintendo, there are a few Mario games that aren't on a Nintendo system and boy are they terrible.

Super Best Friends Forever #3!

...in which Superman receives a massive super-wedgie.  I figured the main heroes would always remain off camera in these shorts, but I figured wrong!  When Supergirl tries to ditch being grounded, the Man of Steel himself shows up to make sure she doesn't sneak out (to fight crime, naturally).  These SBFF shorts continue to be awesome and continue to need to be a whole show.  The other short on DC Nation was a re-purposed skit from Cartoon Network's MAD show, which 9 times out of 10 completely sucks, so I wouldn't bother.  You should, though, feast your eyes on the third Super Best Friends, which is firmly grounded (get it?) after the jump.

Friday Clip-Show: Roller Kingdom

Every once and awhile a local business will have a public access type commercial that will either be so bad it's hilarious, or be so savy and self-aware that it turns into something great.  Roller Kingdom in Reno, NV has one of those savy self-aware type of commercials that is totally great.  I mean, it's no Family Auto Mart, but it's pretty darn funny.  I wanna be addicted to roller skating, not crack!

Tim Burton Claims Dark Shadows is Not a Comedy and Tons of New Pictures From the Film

I'm still not sure how to feel about new Dark Shadows Movie. The trailer looks Pretty silly and is full of goofy fish out of water jokes. There is also Johnny Depp Doing stuff Barnabas Collins would probably never do, like stuffing himself into a cardboard box.

Well, Tim Burton says it is not a comedy. He says, all the silly things in the trailer are in the movie, but he doesn't see it as a comedy. He was trying to capture Dark Shadow's weird vibe. He also says any humor is from Barnabas' situation of being buried and unearthed 200 years later being innately funny.

He said, "It's not like I'm being campy with it or anything," "The guy's been locked in a box for 200 years, and [when] he comes out ... something weird is going to happen."

So, if it isn't a comedy, what is it? I can think of four possible answers:

Official Photos from Quentin Tarantino's 'Django Unchained' Surface

Photos of Quentin Tarantino's western epic Django Unchained, starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Kerry Washington, and Leonardo DiCaprio, made it to the internet this morning. While the photos aren't exactly action-packed, I am super stoked for this film to be released. Check them out after the jump!

New Robot Chicken DC Comics Special!

Do you love both DC Comics (Yes!) and Robot Chicken (Eh, not really)?  Well those two things are coming together in the Robot Chicken DC Comics Special!  Much like the Star Wars Special Robot Chicken did before (I think like 3 times?) it's an entire episode of Robot Chicken  where their (allegedly) finely tuned parody ray will be focused on the heroes and lore of the DC Universe.  I'm sure you're wondering what kind of celebrity guests (or Seth Green's personal friends) will be appearing... well, hit the jump.  Also there's another teaser pic.

"Weird Al" Yankovic Elected President!

... in the next episode of The Aquabats Super Show, that is!  That's right, the master of pop song parody himself is guesting in this Saturday's episode! Also slated to appear is a shape-shifting Pilgrim boy and a giant bug who is terrorizing Detroit.  It should be quite a show!  Promo video after the jump!

Weekly Craft Geekery: 4/25/12

I've got some more geeky goodies for you this week. I found an awesome Samus art print, some really cool Star Wars, Super Mario, X-men, and Zelda iron on patches, candy that looks like blue meth, some really neat Adventure Time and Pac Man phone cases, a light switch that uses arcade game buttons, and even a Link baby onesie! You NEED to check these out!

Look at this awesome Metroid art. Samus is looking cute while getting zapped by a metroid. I love the expression on her face and the whole style of the piece. He also has some other prints in his shop.

Check out the rest of my finds after the jump!

The Walking Dead Episode 1 (PC) [Review]

It's been a long time coming (it was announced back in Feb. 2011, and even delayed once) but the first episode of Telltale Games' The Walking Dead game is finally upon us!  Telltale is known for their excellently written story-based episodic adventure games (and really are the only company who has gotten the whole episodic thing to work), but not every single one of their games have been stellar (although the vast majority of them have).  So is the Walking Dead game more like Sam and Max in The Devil's Playhouse (amazing) or Telltale's Jurassic Park (not so amazing)?  Zombie shamble over the jump to find out.

Sonic the Hedgehog Fan Film? Yes Please!

Eddie Lebron, director of the amazing MegaMan fanfilm from last year, has recently announced his next major project: Sonic the Hedgehog!
"Sonic" is a non-profit 10-20 minute short fan film based on the "Sonic the Hedgehog" video game franchise that will be available free to download and watch. This short film will implement various elements of the Sonic mythology ranging from the cartoons, comics, and, most importantly, the video games. The film will be a live action piece mainly focusing on the first 3 SEGA Genesis games of the series; in terms of tone, action, and plot. The film will be shot over the course of Fall/Winter 2010 with selective days in early 2011. The shoot will be a 6 day venture at various locations in various conditions. The 5 day shoot will also include special effects photography and aerial filming. There is no formal release date but we hope to have the final product premiere at the 2011 ScrewAttack Gaming Convention and to go online shortly after; however this is not a promise or a guarantee. The film's release will be announced upon completion of the film.

The character of "Sonic the Hedgehog" will be a complete CGI character and the film will be a hybrid of both live action and completely computer generated environments and action sequences. Various familiar enemies from the franchise will be featured and the CGI Sonic has been designed to be as faithful to his original design as possible while adding subtle touches to make the character more detailed.

And who will be playing the titular character? The answer may surprise you...

Holy Crap, Axe Cop is Getting a TV Show!

Extremely popular webcomic Axe Cop is headed for Fox 2013!  It's going to be in 15 minute episodes as part of Fox's new Animation Domination HD (ADHD, you're so clever Fox) block that will premiere the same year.  The whole block sounds like an Adult Swim ripoff (and is being helmed by Nick Weidenfeld, a former Adult Swim exec), with 15 minute shows and a late night timeslot (it'll be going up against SNL) but if Axe Cop is involved I'll be there!  Currently they're looking for a writer to adapt it for TV, but last I check Axe Cop already has a writer (who was 5 at the time of Axe Cop's creation) who is plenty up to the task.  Actually I'm sort of worried Axe Cop written by anyone but a kid will feel forced, but we'll see.

Also I feel like Axe Cop would be a whole lot funnier if it were live action, perhaps with corny CGI effects.

Hey, You Should Play This #9: A Super Mario Summary

Yeah, I know I did a Mario fan game not too long ago, but this is something interesting and a lot different.  A Super Mario Summary by Johan Peitz takes every level from the original Super Mario Bros. and condenses them down to single screens.  What you get is an almost completely different game, a sort of puzzle platformer that tests your reflexes and has you applying some quick thinking to snag all the coins and reach the top of that flagpole.  Cross the jiggity-jump for more (and as always, the link to go play it!).

Syndicate (360) [Review]

Syndicate was an old isometric real time tactics game from 1993 by Bullfrog Productions (Dungeon Keeper, Theme Park, etc.) that is critically renowned and has even made a few Best Games of All Time lists.  Obviously, the original game had a formula that worked-- so when EA and Starbreeze Studios got together to reboot the game for 2012 they did what any sane and logical person would do and change it into a first person shooter. Wait, what? That doesn't make any sense at all.

Sunday Short Story 4/22/12: Shameless Self Promotion Edition

Alright first off I've got some apologies for all (1 or 2) of you dear readers.  I'm sorry for missing last couple Sundays-- you know, life gets in the way and secondly I'm sorry for the god awful fan-fiction I foisted on you all as some sort of half-assed April Fools prank.  To make up for it (or possibly make you more pissed off, I dunno) I'm going to go against my better judgement and present to you a short story I wrote myself some time ago.  If you follow my internet-related output (and I very much doubt you do) you may have read this before, but without further ado I present to you the purposely pulpy and intentionally ridiculous Carnage Execution Society.  If you couldn't tell (it's pretty obvious) it's heavily inspired by both Kill Bill and the fabulous Wii game No More Heroes.  As a matter of fact I may of wrote it right after completing NMH2: Desperate Struggle.  I'd really like to make this into a short film someday too... but that's something that probably never will happen.  Another way you could summarize this story-- like if the movie Sucker Punch was good.  Anyways, it's after the jump.  You can critique it in the comments if you want. Be gentle.

Peep On These New Animal Crossing Screens! [UPDATE!]

The news from tonight's Nintendo Direct just keeps on storming in, this time with 2 (not one, two) screenshots from the new Animal Crossing title in the works for 3DS.  This has no official US release date yet, but I'd bet millions we'll see it stateside.  Hit the jump for the two screens-- wish there was more pics and more info, but this is all there is for now.  I'm sure we will know all about this game when E3 rolls around.

UPDATE!: I found two more! They're behind the jump as well.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 Announced for 3DS!!! [UPDATE!]

This time some hot news flows forth from Nintendo of America's twitter account:
Mario fans get excited b/c New Super Mario Bros. 2 is launching for Nintendo #3DS in August!

All the info we have is this tweet and a blurry screenshot, but I'm already immensely excited.  Looks like the raccoon tail is coming back (not the tanooki suit like in 3D Land, just the regular raccoon tail!), there's the flying P-meter from SMB3 and those weird rectangular platforms from 3 as well!  It's no secret that Super Mario Bros. 3 is my favorite Mario game (nay, my favorite game, period) so the more they pull from Mario's 3rd outing the better, in my opinion.  August is pretty close too!  Sweet!

UPDATE: Hey whoa, more stuff!  A set of screenshots courtesy of Tiny Cartridge! Hit the jump to fill your eyes with the Mario-y goodness!

Nintendo Celebrates Kirby's 20th With Special Wii Disc

Straight from the horse's mouth (Nintendo's Facebook Page, anyways):

We’re thrilled to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Kirby by releasing a special Wii disc featuring all your favorite Kirby games this year!

They weren't specific on what games will be included, but if it's all my personal favorites, then there better be Kirby's Super Star. Just about all of Kirby's back catalog is pretty awesome though, so I'm sure it will be a disc worth picking up.  I wonder what kind of special features it will have in store (if any)?  More info as it comes!

Springfield's True Location Un-revealed!!!

Sorry guys, looks like it's not Oregon after all.  Seems like the Simpsons' hometown of Springfield is supposed to be ambiguous, and will remain so forever.  Good news though, if you had lost money on a bet, you could totally get it back, I guess.

End of an Era: Cash Cab is Cancelled!

After seven years and a whopping 200 episodes, Discovery is pulling the plug on everyone's favorite taxi cab service/trivia show, Cash Cab.  It still gets consistently good ratings and Ben Bailey has won 2 Emmys for his mad hosting skills, but Discovery Channel apparently decided they don't want to run shows that are cheap to make that people like, apparently.

Personally though, I got kinda turned off to Cash Cab when the show's horrible secret was revealed to me on the Pizzacast.

Bonus Clip-Show!: 3 Second Rule

Yeah, I know we already had a Friday Clip-Show today, but I just had to put up this video.  If ponies aren't your thing, here's another video for you (that you deserve, pony hater).

You thought Rebecca Black was bad? This is so much worse.  Picture if Paula Deen was a pop country singer that, well, couldn't sing and you've got this must-see YouTube turd.  I honestly don't think she is on key once the entire song.  It actually really reminds me of this Tim and Eric bit.

Friday Clip-Show: Pinkie Pie Says "Smile" [Video]

I can't explain the joy I get from watching Pinkie Pie from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic cutting dudes in Skyrim. It is truly a sight to see. And the song has been stuck in my head for almost a week now.

Kinect for Skyrim Lets You Dragon Shout At Your TV

[caption id="attachment_1550" align="aligncenter" width="638" caption="Imagine he is doing this directly into a Kinect."][/caption]

Warm up those vocal chords, because The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is getting Kinect support!  With it you'll of course be able to dragon shout just by shouting for real (and freaking out your neighbors, no doubt ably, in the process) but also command your allies, loot stuff, organize menus, and setup hotkey commands.  You can even use voice commands to quick save and quick load the game!  It all seems really cool, and being a game about shouting at dragons, I'm surprised they didn't do this a lot sooner!  The best part is that it's all free too, and coming out this month!  Technically you don't have to shout, but if you aren't yelling FUS ROH DAH at your TV you're doing it wrong.  Cross the jump for a video from the game's developer Bethesda Softworks showing off the voice recognition by clicking "read more" or by using the dragon shout JUMP SLIEN NUS.

Classic Dark Shadows Comics Rise From Their Coffins

Coinciding with the release of Tim Burton's Dark Shadows movie (which we may have discussed on the podcast), Hermes Press is re-releasing two Dark Shadows comics!  One of them is a collection of the best Dark Shadows stories, selected by Dark Shadows historian (which is something you can be, apparently) Dr. Jeff Thompson.  Titled Dark Shadows: The Best of the Original Series, it promises to be the last word in the best of the 1968-1976 comic series.

The second book, Dark Shadows: Interrupted Voyage, focuses on Barnabas Collins back in the 17th century during the Salem Witch Trials.  It's actually more of an illustrated novella than a comic, but sounds interesting nonetheless.

I'm sort of interested in picking these up, as a fan of the show (thanks, Netflix!).  I had no idea there were even Dark Shadows comics and I'm wondering if these are any good.  The retro art is pretty appealing-- this is definitely something I'll skim in a store at the very least.

Both books will be available in May, with Best of the Original Series priced at $49.99 and Interrupted Voyage at $8.99.  Hit the jump to peep on some covers.

A Look at the New Katniss Barbie

I was pretty skeptical when I heard there was going to be a Katniss Barbie doll. I didn't think it needed to exist, and they were just cashing in on the popularity of the books and movie. I half expected a dark haired barbie with her perma- high heeled feet and toothy smile with bright pink lips.  I was pretty surprised when I saw this doll.

The Location of Springfield Revealed!!!

I had my money on Springfield, Illinois (due to its close proximity to a for-real Shelbyville), but it turns out the actual location of the Simpson family-- according to a recent interview with show creator Matt Groening-- is Springfield, Oregon.  Sorry, all the other Springfields in America, looks like you can no longer claim to be the home of Homer.  It's not really that big of a surprise since Groening is from Portland and many of the city's streets were the inspiration for the names of several Simpsons characters.

Eagleheart Season 2 Promo is Totally Hardcore

This promo for the second season of Eagleheart seems to show that they have picked up their game and are outdoing themselves on guts, gore and ridiculousness. I will definitely be tuning in on the 12th.

9-Year Old Kid Builds His Own Arcade (Out of Cardboard)

Check out this genius kid named Caine who built (and maintains) his own DIY arcade made entirely of cardboard, tape, cellophane, and apparently calculators.  After having zero customers for the longest time, a dude named Nirvan Mullick stopped by Caine's dad's auto parts store (where Caine's Arcade is located) bought a Fun Pass (which nets you 500 plays for $2) and decided Caine's Arcade was the perfect subject for a short film.  Nirvan then set out to give Caine some business-- and to give Caine the best day of his young life.  It's pretty heartwarming stuff, and reminds me of my own crazy childhood schemes, except in Caine's case thanks to the kindness of a stranger it actually worked out as fantastic as his 9 year old brain imagined it.  Hit the jump for the full film, which is worth the ten minutes it takes for it to remind us that there's still good left in this world.  After that, hit up the Caine's Arcade website and donate some cash to put this kid through college-- just imagine what he could build out of cardboard with an engineering degree!

Weekly Craft Geekery: 4/10/12

Hello! It's time again for another Weekly Craft Geekery! I have a good one for you today! I found some really cute Catwoman artwork, My Little Pony shotglasses, sweet Adventure Time Princess Bubblegum earrings, cool bugs, really neat ear-chomping chain chomp earrings, and a crochet Zoidberg hat!

Look at this cute Catwoman art print! It has a nice slightly goofy pin-up look to it.  I honestly had a hard time choosing which print to choose out of the artist's shop. She has a really cool, cute style. There is an awesome Poison Ivy, Power Girl, Zatanna, Batgirl and Batwoman prints too. I highly recommend looking at them. I will warn you, that her shop is a tiny bit NSFW. A couple of her illustrations have bare breasts. It's not graphic or anything. Just fair warning if your work is strict on that type of stuff, or you want to avoid an awkward moment. Anyways, I love this print. I love to look on her face, and her super curvy style.

Check out the rest of my picks after the jump!

It's Samantha's Birthday!!!

That's right, it's staff writer Samantha's birthday today!!!

This cat says "omg you haz a birfday!" Leave some birthday wishes in the comments (if you are awesome)!

Angelina Jolie's Maleficent Gets a Release Date!

One of Disney's best villains is finally getting her own movie. It also happens to star Angelina Jolie. Disney Studios announced that Maleficent will premiere on March 14, 2014.  I'm pretty interested on how this is going to turn out.

"National Comics" Returns After 63 Year Hiatus, Highlights Obsucre Characters

On Monday, DC Comics announced the return of the long-retired National Comics banner as part of their "New 52 (ish)" reboot. The DC reboot has generated a bit of controversy with its renumbering of all comic series back to #1, including the 900-plus running Action Comics, as well as revamping and imagining the publisher's most popular characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Flash (Batman and Green Lantern were left mostly unchanged, however).

Best Pitch For a Show Ever

Ever wonder how exactly The Muppet Show got on the air? This is the amazing pitch video Jim Henson made to sell it to CBS.

Hey, You Should Play This #8: Mushroom Kingdom Fusion v0.5

Ever wished there were more playable characters in your Mario games? Like, a whole lot more and they were from a bunch of other games? Then Mushroom Kingdom Fusion is for you!  If you ever wanted to play Mario as Link, or Mega Man, or Sonic, or even Meta Knight, then this is where it's at.  I mean, that alone should have you begging for a download link... well beg no more because there's one after that pesky jump.

Mass Effect 3 (PS3) [Review]

Wow, this one is hard for me...previously I may of said some things about all the complaining about the game's controversial ending, figuring that, well, it can't be that bad, can it?  Well, now that I've played through the whole game I can tell you I was-- wait this probably needs some spoiler warning.

WARNING: This review is chock full of spoileriffic content! If you haven't finished the game yet and don't want to know about the ending, then don't read further! Really though, it doesn't matter. I would of preferred some spoilers, that way the game's ending wouldn't be the world's biggest surprise kick in the junk.  Let me try to help out you non-spoiler types: before you play the game, set your expectations for the ending really, really low.  Then set them even lower than that.  Now maybe you won't be as disappointed.

There, now what was I saying? Oh yeah, I was wrong. I completely understand why people are so upset, although the whole FTC thing was a little much, but this game ends in probably the lamest way imaginable.  But what kind of game review starts at the game's end?  Let's do this thing.

Super Best Friends Forever #2 (And an Animal Man clip!)

Did you miss DC Nation on Cartoon Network this morning?  If you did, you missed the second Super Best Friends Forever short, and a really great Animal Man one too!  SBFF is still as cute and awesome as the first one and features a healthy dose of Batgirl, racing to meet the team.  Cameos include both Commissioner Gordon and Poison Ivy (whose Lauren Faust design is fantastic!)!  The Animal Man short was also great, as it had some terrific animation that really shows off the way Buddy Baker "borrows" his animal powers.  Hit the jump for the full Super Best Friends Forever and a clip from the Animal Man short. (I couldn't find the full short, but will probably update this if it turns up on the ol' Intertubes.)

Original Fallout is Free on GOG.com for the Next 48 Hours!

The awesome, awesome guys at Good Old Games are handing out free copies of the original Fallout for, like the headline says, the next 48 hours.  It's a great classic and I'd recommend it to anybody.  Hey, if all your Fallout experience comes from Fallout 3 and New Vegas, this is a great way to find out where that whole world originated.  Also GOG.com is a great website dishing out great classic games you can't find anywhere else for reasonable prices.  What are you waiting for! Go get Fallout for free (a $5.99 dollar value!)

New Mario Tennis Open Trailer Makes Me Want It

Before I saw the video of Mario Tennis Open that Nintendo released today I couldn't of been more not interested in it.  Every previous clip Nintendo has pushed out just showed Mario n' pals playing some boring no-frills video game tennis, which is something I could do by shoving Mario Power Tennis for Gamecube into my Wii.  This video, though, shows there's a whole lot more going on. See it after the jump!

Everything We Know About Notch's 0x10c Except How to Pronounce It (With Screenshots!)

I mean do I pronounce it "zero ex ten cee",  "zero ex ten superscript cee," or what? Well, no matter because the game sounds way cool. It's set in an alternate future where the space race never ended, which alone is an awesome concept.  Here's the background Notch posted on the game's new site:

In a parallel universe where the space race never ended, space travel was gaining popularity amongst corporations and rich individuals.

In 1988, a brand new deep sleep cell was released, compatible with all popular 16 bit computers. Unfortunately, it used big endian, whereas the DCPU-16 specifications called for little endian. This led to a severe bug in the included drivers, causing a requested sleep of 0x0000 0000 0000 0001 years to last for 0x0001 0000 0000 0000 years.

It's now the year 281 474 976 712 644 AD, and the first lost people are starting to wake up to a universe on the brink of extinction, with all remote galaxies forever lost to red shift, star formation long since ended, and massive black holes dominating the galaxy.

Hey, You Should Play This #7: Poacher

You know Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, the guy that The Escapist pays to talk fast about how much he hates most video games?  Well, he's also an indie game devloper ( he made Trilby: The Art of Theft , 5 Days a Stranger, etc) and has just released a new game called Poacher. Follow the jump for some ramblings on it (by yours truly) and of course the link to download it!

Only You Can Save The Venture Bros. (... Toy Line)!

That's right. You're looking at the prototype of a Brock Samson action figure. I'll give you a minute to calm down from all your giddy squealing.

Yo good? Good. Because this toy, like the rest of the Venture Bros. line by Big Bang Pow, is in serious danger of never seeing the light of day. Apparently, the VB toys were going to released in 2-packs, but were cancelled due to low preorder numbers. Big Bang Pow has decided to release them one at a time, but ONLY if there is enough of a demand for them. If you care about awesome toys for an awesome show, I urge you to go and PREORDER these figures!

Check out the full proto-Brock pic, as well as the finished designs for some of the toys after the jump!

Axe Cop to Become President of the World

...in his next miniseries, entitled Axe Cop: President of the World.  It picks up where the first print-only Axe Cop story, Bad Guy Earth left off, continuing the adventures of everyone's favorite axe-toting law enforcement officer.  Like always, it's being penned by master scribe (and five year old) Malachai Nicolle and drawn by his 29 year old brother, Ethan Nicolle.  Issue #1 is set to be released to the Axe Cop loving world on July 25, 2012!  If you're new to the wild world of Axe Cop, I suggest starting here, then reading the webcomic from the beginning.  Oh, and if you're a PVP fan, Axe Cop and LOLBat are crossing over as we speak.

Promo For Next Week's Adventure Time Might be the Cutest Thing Ever

I know we have been posting an awful lot about Adventure Time, but this promo for next week's episode, “Five Short Graybles” was too adorable not to share. Ever wonder what Beemo does when Finn and Jake aren't around? This clip has the answer. It is adorable and proves Beemo is the best.

Click on the jump to see. You know you need some more Beemo in your life today.
