HOLY CRAP! News has just broken that The Walt Disney Company (the people who bring you classic cartoons and Marvel Comics) has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm, LTD. for a whopping $4.065 billion (yes, BILLION). Their first order of business? Not much, just announcing multiple Star Wars sequels, with the first to hit theaters by 2015.
The purchase of Lucasfilm has been reported to include the subsidiaries LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, as well as all film and television properties owned by Lucasfilm (SW, Red Tails, Howard the Duck, etc).
Regarding the news of possible Star Wars sequels, Disney CEO Bob Iger claims that there will not only be an Episode VII, but plans to release “a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years.”
Needless to say, my mind is totally blown. So much so that I am having a hard time fully comprehending these events. My first thought is that Disney treats properties that it acquires with a high level of respect, as evidenced by their protease of Marvel and subsequent non-meddling in the company's affairs. The prospect of SW sequels without the invisible hand of George Lucas in intriguing as well. Finally, this raises questions about Lucasfilms' long-standing relationship with Dark Horse Comics, and whether or not those relations will fall by the wayside ala Boom! Studios loss of their licensed Disney franchises.
